Point 9: historic buildings

It is possible to enter into the castle of San Vito sul Cesano by crossing the suggestive entrance door, a pointed arch surmounted by some noble coats of arms in sandstone which must certainly have known better times.

In the village there are 3 important historic buildings.

Palazzo Bonajuti at Corso Fratelli Bandiera n. 20.

It was renovated by Giangiacomo Bonajuti in 1699, as can be read in the flashy carved stone portal. It consisted of large rooms with stone entrances, once filled with frescos and antique furniture.

In recent times the building has been used as a restaurant, very renowned in the area, called “La Luna nel Pozzo”; the name derives from the fact that inside the building there is a well, in whose water the moon reflects.

A few decades ago, a Roman antique dealer removed a terrace with its artistic seventeenth-century iron railing from the building.

We know two women from the wealthy Bonajuti family:

Ippolita, born in 1674, and wife of Count Castracani Gianfrancesco from Cagli.

Orsola born in 1676 wife of Giacomo Guazzugli from Pergola, who gave rise to the Guazzugli-Bonajuti branch, and who died in 1714.

Palazzo Merlini at Via Montello n.11

The building belongs to the ancient and illustrious Merlini family, who moved to Pergola in the 18th century where they died out. Its beautiful portal in worked stone can be appreciated.

Nicolò Merlini, in 1435, together with other jurists from San Vito, wrote the Statute of the Castle.

Palazzo Servizi at Corso Fratelli Bandiera n.16.

Noble family who moved to Pergola in the last century.

The house has a beautiful stone portal with large vaults.

Another important building for San Vito and the surrounding area, even if indirectly linked to our community, is the former Convent of the Minor Observants, in Romita, in the Municipality of Pergola.

The convent was built in 1373 and enlarged and renovated several times over the centuries. Now it is completely abandoned, so you can only see the ruins, with the unmistakable ruined bell tower.

Ravignana

Point 10: the statutes of San Vito and the province of Ravignana

We are now in the center of the village in its most characteristic square. There is a curious crank fountain to remind us that in the past, when running water did not exist, people came here to fill jars and terracotta jugs.
