Point 3: The old street

We are almost at the end of the old route from the Old Pieve to the Castle of San Vito sul Cesano which is commonly called “The old street” or “Della Cupa” as it was known in the past.

Exactly at this point the road crossed with another very important one at that time, the one that from the “Ponte dei Sospiri” climbed the “poggio” and reached the village. During some religious celebrations, this ancient route was travelled in procession, both to get from the village to the Pieve and to get to the Church of the Virgin Mary of Loreto.

This last church was one of the three branch churches of the Parish together with the Church of Saint Apollinare and the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows or Old Pieve and today it no longer exists. It is therefore a ghost church because the exact point where it was located cannot even be found.

In the various documents preserved up to today, we read that it was located two hundred paces outside the walls and people passed in front of it during the procession from San Vito to the Pieve. So it should be here somewhere.

On our right we can notice a small hill, where, probably, there was an old tower or a sighting tower. This area is in a strategic position, because it allows to keep a large part of the territory under control, both towards the sea and towards the mountains.

In the past, having a sighting tower in this position allowed who was on the lookout to transmit messages and alarm signals in good time in case the enemies tried to attack the Castle.

On the occasion of the most important fair of San Vito which took place each December 10th, during the celebrations of the Virgin Mary of Loreto, many farmers passed along this road to bring their cows to the fair.

To understand the importance of this ancient fair, which took place until the 1960s, just think that the line of animals in columns started from here and reached the main square of the village. Each owner could bring up to 30 cattle.

At this point, you just have to continue along this road, in the direction of the town, to reach Saint Francesco Square. There, you will find another illustrative sign that will explain how to start the other route, the yellow one, inside the Borgo.
