Point 8: the temple of SS. Sacramento
We are now in front of an ancient door and in front of the Temple of the SS. Sacramento, belonging to the Confraternity of the Sacrament, one of the most important and active in our area.
We have just a few information about the church, but its presence, in addition to the other numerous churches in the village and in the area, let us understand how important San Vito sul Cesano was in the past.
The temples and churches were destinations for pilgrimages, and an expression of the devotion and faith of the rural and urban population.
A confraternity was associated with each church, there was a convent of Franciscan fathers and a hospital. It was very important from an economic, social and cultural point of view, because when it was an autonomous municipality there was a Monte Frumentario and it had its own magistracy, and considerable autonomy.
Once, the Temple of the SS. Sacramento was a magnificent building but today only the perimeter walls, the portal with a frieze worn by time, and this gate, ancient but enormously ruined, remain. Inside there were very important frescoes.
In 1975, during the checks carried out by the Superintendence of the Galleries and Works of Art of Marche Region of Urbino, the persistent dilapidation of the building was certified. The building was in fact without a roof, but thanks to the interest of our Parish Priest, the frescoes were restored and placed in the current Parish Church.
The 16th century frescoes are attributed to Pietro Paolo Agabiti, painter and architect born around 1470 in Sassoferrato and died around 1540 in Cupramontana.
His works can also be found in Cingoli, in Sassoferrato, in the Church of S. Croce in Jesi and throughout Marche region.
The best preserved fresco can be admired in the Chapel of the Virgin Mary inside the Parish Church.
It represents the Virgin Mary with Child, Saints Peter and John the Baptist and two musician Angels.
The figures are clear, the outlines are well marked and the colors are vivid.
The dimensions of the fresco are: cm 257×300.
