Point 15: poem ``Ancient Window``

Inviting you to enjoy the beautiful panorama, we would like to share with you a poem, written by a boy from San Vito, which sums up our common feeling.

This poem is about the past time that is still so much alive and felt in our minds and in our daily gestures, because the past is not as distant as we believe.

The author, Elia Banci, wrote it for the presentation of the book “San Vito sul Cesano – The seasons of our life” which took place on May 12th, 2019.

The title is:

“Ancient window”

The rooster’s crow

wakes up the little country village.

After the first meal in the morning

everyone has his duty.

Among the streets of the village there are

the smell of freshly baked bread,

the pungent smell of the shoemaker’s glues,

the sound of the carpenter’s saw

and the beating of the blacksmith’s hammer.

The farmer’s job is rough,

often the daily work of the land

and with livestock was massacring.

His rough hands and tanned face

did him such a noble man.

When the banquet time arrives,

everyone sits at the table.

From the early hours of the afternoon,

everyone goes back to his job,

until the sun goes down.

Windows open and lights on.

After dinner the last ringing of bells,

and then at sunrise all starts again.

And now leafing through the pages of this Book

the memory comes alive.
