Point 5: festivals, customs and traditions

We are in front of the headquarters of the San Vito Giovani (Young) Association, the only association in the village, with the objective to promote and enhance it.

The word “young” is not linked to chronological age, because to be part of the association it is enough to be young inside, in the soul!

When we talk about San Vito sul Cesano, we think of the Bruschetta Festival (Festival of Toasted Bread).

This festival has been the most important event in San Vito for more than forty years and represents the main initiative organized every year by San Vito Giovani Association, a fixed appointment during the first weekend of August.

In order to promote the territory, safeguarde traditions, relaunche and enhance local production linked to agri-food, food and wine, craftsmanship as well as the popular culture present in the area, the Bruschetta Festival has achieved an important goal.

In fact, on the occasion of the 40th edition, in year 2016, the Festival was the first event, within the municipality of San Lorenzo in Campo, to have obtained the “De.Co.” recognition as a municipal historical event.

Furthermore, only one year later, in 2017, the Association obtained the registration of the “Bruschetta la Sanvitese” in the Municipal register of De.Co. products because it is prepared with strictly local ingredients such as spelt bread, Suasa onion and extra-virgin olive oil.

Another important project carried out by the Association is the publication of the first book entirely dedicated to our village entitled “San Vito sul Cesano – The seasons of our life”. The book was launched to the public on 12 May 2019.

In this book you will find all the information you heard during this tour, and much more!

If you want to buy the book you can contact San Vito Giovani Association. The cost is €15.

The Sanvitiadi, on the other hand, were a nice and amazing event which unfortunately hasn’t been held any more, but which was very attended in the past.

The Sanvitiadi, organized from 1975 until 1988, involved the whole village and included sport, comedy and folklore, following the model of “Games without frontiers”.

The competitions consist of a rapid engaging succession of games requiring agility, physical ability, intelligence, and above all team spirit in all teams involved.

This event brought out solidarity, respect for opponents, friendship and a great wish to have fun together, and spend a happy summer evening in San Vito.

It is not a coincidence that the phrase that was always repeated among the audience and spectators was “Things like this can only be seen in San Vito sul Cesano!”, with a sense of amazement.

“Pasquella” is one of the traditions proudly revived in San Vito nowadays. This rite takes place between the old and the new year, exactly between December 31st and January 6th, and it is organized by a group of boys who go from house to house, throughout the village and the countryside to sing the Happy New Year and Pasquella.

The singers are always accompanied by an accordion, and with their old-fashioned folk songs, they warm up those cold nights, bringing a breath of joy and happiness to the families visited.

Furthermore, the Association regularly creates the Nativity Scene both inside than outside the Parish Church and the Christmas tree in the churchyard. On Christmas Eve, a party with chestnuts and mulled wine is organized and the proceeds go to charity.

In 2005, and for the following two years, on the evening of Christmas Eve, the San Vito Giovani Association created a live Nativity Scene in the streets of the town too, recreating a suggestive Christmas atmosphere.

In San Vito sul Cesano religious celebrations are always deeply felt by its inhabitants and mark the passing of time as it was in the past.

San Vito sul Cesano has deep rural roots and each 17th January the Confraternity of Saint Antonio Abate of San Vito sul Cesano organizes a big celebration in honor of the patron saint.

On this occasion, at the end of the Holy Mass, flours, feed, agricultural vehicles and animals are blessed and the typical blessed bread and the calendar of the Saint are distributed.

Each stable has its own Calendar of Saint Anthonio on the wall and the person who delivered it across the countryside was called “Santantognaro”.

Each February 3rd, Saint Biagio, one of the patron saints of the village, is celebrated and during the Holy Mass some blessed bread is distributed.

The other Patron Saint of the village, Saint Vito, is celebrated on June 15th with the celebration of a Holy Mass.

Another important event for San Vito is the Holy Heart of Jesus which is celebrated on the first Sunday after August 15th. Until recently, on that Sunday children received the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation.

In addition to the celebration of the Holy Mass, there is a Procession throughout the streets of the village which ends with a small refreshment for all participants.

According to a very old tradition, on the third Sunday of September, the “Grieved Virgin Mary” is celebrated at the “Pieve Vecchia Monumentale” of San Vito sul Cesano. Before the celebration there is a preparation period characterized by the recitation of the Holy Rosary, the celebration of the Holy Mass and a brief meditation.

Every evening many people go to the Church and on the day of the celebration many people participate in religious rites which end with a tombola game. The proceeds go to the maintenance of the church.

Sunday October 18th Our Lady of Fatima is celebrated.

In the Parish Church a statue completely identical to the one found in the Chapel of the Apparitions in Fatima is venerated.

Last but not least, on December 10th, the Virgin Mary of Loreto is celebrated.

In the Parish Church there is an ancient wooden and reproduced in scale house of the Holy House of Loreto with decorations, dating back to the first half of the eighteenth century. In the past, on this day, a very important agricultural fair was held and many farmers and people participated.

The common oven

Point 6: the common oven and the mutual aid society

We are in front of the place where once there was the shared oven. Once upon a time there was Mrs. Teresa, mother of Gino Franceschetti, the blacksmith of San Vito sul Cesano, who managed the community oven, paying the rent to the municipality of San Lorenzo in Campo, the oven’s owner. She carried out his excellent job from 1930 to 1953, and in exchange for the right compensation, she took care that everyone had fresh and fragrant bread.
